Starting as a humble and strong farming community in the late 1600s along the Long Island Sound on Connecticut’s “Gold Coast,” it was incorporated into a town in 1835. By the early 1900s, artists and musicians began to flock to Westport, and its reputation as a “creative haven” was born. Some of its famous residents over the years have been F. Scott Fitzgerald, Paul Newman, and Martha Stewart.
Today, Westport is a vibrant community that retains its colonial New England town feel. Yes, you can still find historic architecture with white picket fences and rolling hills, but its notoriety for being a chic suburb brimming with a diverse culture of artists, writers, and musicians is as strong as ever. With its multitude of art galleries, live music venues, shopping districts, and fine dining, Westport has become a coveted town to live in, especially with its proximity to New York City of about 52 miles. Historic architecture includes Greek Revival, Federal, Italianate, Neoclassical, and Victorian styles. There are also spacious modern homes, posh townhouses, and luxury condominiums.

Over at Bartaco, the humble taco has become an art form and “upscale street food,” and you simply must try the coconut shrimp taco. Locals know the Spotted Horse Tavern, with its old wood floors and fireplace, as a “neighborhood respite.” Rumor has it the pan-seared salmon is excellent.
If Mexican food is your heart’s desire, Viva Zapata is the answer to your prayer. Try their seafood chimichanga, and it will make a believer out of you. To really experience the essence of Westport and its community feel, though, you have to go to the Black Duck Cafe for their happy hour, live music, artisan beers, and Davey Jones burger.
The unlimited shopping of New York City is always at your fingertips, but Westport also has its own high-end boutiques, independent stores, antique shops, spas, and more. Things to Do
The 29-acre park known as Compo Beach will more than satisfy your need for a sunny, sandy beach to lounge on. They have volleyball courts, a long boardwalk, a concession stand, picnic areas, and a marina clubhouse.
